The Metamorphosis

Gregor wakes from another nightmare and tries to pull himself together to catch his train to work. As a travelling salesman he doesn’t have time to build any meaningful relationships; he is too busy to spend time with his family and the other salesmen, customers and travellers are in and out of his life in an instant.

Work is not going well. In his effort to provide for his family Gregor has made some mistakes, and his troubles are closing in on him. Added to that his physical and mental health is causing him concern – his body is beginning to fail him and he is experiencing crippling insomnia; nightmares plague him
when he does manage to sleep.

Despite these stresses Gregor is comforted by the knowledge that he is working to support his family, and especially to send his younger sister to study music so that she will become a world renowned violinist. He and his sister have a close and loving relationship, providing moments of brightness and clarity for Gregor.

A series of unfortunate encounters and impending financial and work issues gradually wear Gregor down, until one night in the midst of his familiar nightmares, he experiences a shocking physical transformation.

Unable to work, or even to leave his room, Gregor is no longer able to provide for his family. In fact he becomes a burden as they try to care for him despite his physical appearance. As he becomes more accustomed to his new form, Gregor slowly loses what is left of his humanity and is perceived not only as a burden, but as a threat. Those around him also experience their own
transformations as they try to find ways to deal with the devastating results.
