Laura James
6 January – 31 March 2026

What happens when we slip through a gap between reality and imagination?

This is the question that informs the work of British artist, Laura James (1994). Weaving together an evocative colour palette and strong textural feel, her paintings seek to transport viewers into an enchanting world that hovers between the familiar and the unknown.

Laura’s practice is intuitive: pushing the unpredictable boundaries of water-based mediums and then regaining control by incorporating coloured pencil, collage and mono-printed elements into the compositions. Recurring motifs such as mountains, moons, and organic forms are often encapsulated into portal-like frames, creating hazy stopgaps between the real and the imagined.

The artist is guided by the innate magic of the natural world and how we as humans impact and imprint upon it. Her work is as informed by the cosmic as it is by the earthly, and she views herself as a vessel for enmeshing these two terrains together.

Laura James is based in Watford. She graduated from Central Saint Martins with a First Class Honours degree in 2015 and has exhibited works in London and the South East of England. Her works have sold to private collectors in the UK, Europe and the USA.
